Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by State Secretary M. Thompson. Partially printed document grants Giess a liquor license and permission to keep a house of entertainment in Salisbury, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Signed by McKean as governor. Docketed by treasurer on verso, dated 1 November, 1805.

McKean was a delegate to the Continental Congress 1774-1776, 1778-1782, served as President of Congress in 1781, and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
