Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Confederate Secretary of War Seddon writes to his wife about the Civil War and the Battle of Vicksburg. States "I am in the greatest anxiety about Vicksburg- The Yankees I fear have taken Jackson- At last accounts they were only a few miles from it and our forces retiring- Vicksburg is cut off..." Mentions General Johnson (possibly General Joseph E. Johnston, commanding Confederate forces at Jackson, Mississippi with General John Gregg). Transmits a "Yankee paper" (not included).
