At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Poem in memory of George Luther Stearns. This copy was written for his wife, Mary Stearns. Mounted on a piece of letter sized paper. The poem was first published in May 1867 in the "Atlantic Monthly."

John G. Whittier was a noted poet, abolitionist and Quaker.
George L. Stearns was a member of John Brown's Secret Six, and later helped form the colored regiments 54th and 55th Massachusetts and 5th Cavalry.
