Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Ives served in H company, 151st regiment, New York volunteer infantry. Collection contains three letters: an autograph letter signed dated 26 June 1863 and written from Maryland Heights (4 pages); an autograph letter signed dated 23 May 1864 and written from Fredericksburg, Virginia (1 page); and an autograph letter signed dated 24 October 1864 and written from Middletown, Shennandoah Valley (4 pages). The 24 October 1864 letter graphically describes "Sheridan's ride" at Cedar Creek.
