Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Introducing Henry Lee to the recipient, and requesting that Woodbury offer any possible assistance on his research of a recent war.

Levi Woodbury served as Senator from New Hampshire, and later received appointments from Jackson.
Henry Lee (1787-1837), was the older half brother to Robert E. Lee. As a rewarded for his pro-Jackson essays he was appointed Consul to Algiers in April 1829.
