Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document is signed by Andrew Johnson and countersigned by Seward. It gives the title of Consul to Alexis Robert, at New Orleans. Accompanied by a large white, paper seal.

Satisfactory evidence having been exhibited to me
that Alexis Robert
has been appointed Consul of the Pontifical States, at New Orleans.

I do hereby recognize him as such, and declare him free to exercise and enjoy such functions, powers and privileges as are allowed to Consuls by the Law of Nations or by the laws of the United States.

In Testimony whereof I have caused these Letters to be made
Patent and the Seal of the United States to be hereunto affixed
Given under my hand at the City of Washington
the 26th day of February, A.D. 1868, and
of the Independence if the United States of America the 92nd.
