At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Notes: Basler 7: 30. Written by Lincoln four days after delivering his address at Gettysburg. "Foster" is General John G. Foster. "Wilcox" is General Orlando B. Willcox.

My dear Sir
A despatch from Foster at Cincinnati, received half an hour ago, contains one from Wilcox [sic] at Cumberland Gap, without date, saying "fighting going on at Knoxville to-day." The want of date makes the time of fighting uncertain, but I rather think it means yesterday the 23rd.
