Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Consists of two pages written to Pratt, and two written to Herbie. Written from Head Quarters, 10th Army Corps. "...the rebs charges down on our rifel [sic] pits yesterday morning after some of the troops had started but did not make mutch as we took them agin with some 75 prisoners & took 12 of them over to Genl. Butlers..." Written in pencil.
