Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pleads for supplies (particularly flour), decrying with great urgency having "been frequently without provisions" and claiming that "There must have been some fatal neglect or error somewhere." Elliot & Williams were suppliers for the army. Legionville was a camp in western Pennsylvania used by General Wayne during the Indian Wars of the Old Northwest.
