Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This is the address leaf for a letter sent by Benjamin Harrison, a Virginian Continental Congressman and Declaration of Independence signer, to Jonathan Hudson or Benjamin Levy, merchants in Baltimore. It was sent using a free frank under Harrison's signature, which has partial text loss. Faint postmark includes the word "Phila" and the month "August." No year could be ascertained.

Benjamin Levy (1720-1802) was a Jewish-American merchant who was one of the signers of the Non-Importation Agreement of 1765 that attempted to repeal the Stamp Act
