Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certifies that the undersigned have received of William Leach and Elizabeth Lovett from the estate of John Lovett, a part of the prize from the privateer ship the Pilgrim, commanded by Hugh Hill. Manuscript is not signed. Lovett was a privateer ship merchant and captain in Beverly, Massachusetts. He served as the agent for the Pilgrim's prizes.
