Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by many other men. Acknowledges the receipt of nine pounds each from the selectmen of Ipswich in partial pay for serving in the six weeks campaign at Providence, Rhode Island under Captain Robert Dodge.

The Rhode Island campaign was fought 29 July 1778 to 31 August 1778, and was a failure for the French and American troops.
