Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certifies that he promises to pay John Dodge twenty dollars silver on behalf of the town each month until John is discharged. Note on reverse signed by John Dodge and dated 3 May 1782 states he received the amount in full.

John Dodge served as a lieutenant in Captain Robert Dodge's company.
