Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addressed to Colonel Biddle. Encloses a bill from the tavern in Bound Brook that Biddle promised to settle. Reports that General Nathanael Greene directed him to inform that General George Washington will be at his quarters tomorrow evening. Wishes Biddle could find some hay and grain as the number of horses have risen since the wagons have arrived.
