Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hopes Atlin can get twelve or fourteen dollars by selling his sword, but wouuld settle for ten. Says he has sent ink, paper, and powder, but has more. Says on Saturday evening "Wallis" fired "and put ten shot in the Hows on which is the chief damage he did.

Samuel Paine was a captain during the American Revolution.
