Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States that the payment was ordered at a meeting on 21 August 1758 and to be made from the Rhode Island General Treasury. A note on the verso singed by Northrup indicates he received five pounds on 6 December 1859. Witnessed by Ward as secretary.
