Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Johnson sends Lieutenant Colonel Glen commissions (not included) and indicates that the associated fees must be paid. Concludes "I am now Surrounded by a great Many People of all Sorts..." Written at Fort Johnson.

Johnson helped formulate British policy toward native peoples at the Albany Congress in 1754 and was made superintendent of Iroquois affairs in 1755.
