Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipt confirming payment from Joseph Clarke for sixty-nine pounds worth of cloth. The first half of the receipt dated 27 September, Levy's signature dated 14 October. Clarke's name spelled Clark in text.

Moses Levy was a Jewish businessman from Newport, Rhode Island.
Joseph Clarke was the General Treasurer of Rhode Island.
