Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document countersigned by John Lowell as deputy secretary. Members of the Massachusetts Bay Council also signed, including: James Otis, W. Spooner, Caleb and Thomas Cushing, John Winthrop, B. Chadbourn, John Whitcomb, Jedediah Foster, James Prescott, Elias Taylor, Michael Farley, Jabez Fisher, Moses Gill, B. White, and Dr. Samuel Holten. Harman was appointed a first lieutenant in the 6th company, under Captain Roger Libby, in the 3rd regiment of militia for Cumberland County. Includes a paper seal.
