Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by John Davis as lieutenant and adjutant. Docketed 16 September 1780 by E. Virront, Lieutenant Colonel commanding inspection. Docketed in a second location on verso with indecipherable signature. Created at Camp Steenrapie, which was a Revolutionary War era military camp located in what is now known as Bergen County, New Jersey.
