Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Governor Clinton of Colonel Willet's recent victory over the enemy. Says that Willet's men killed and wounded ninety, while taking only five dead themselves, even though they were outnumbered. Offers to accompany Clinton on his upcoming trip "visit the army down towards New York."

James Bruyn was a Lieutenant Colonel in the New York state militia.
