Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document signed by Thomas Kimball, whose identity is unknown, who appears to have written everything in ink on the page. Document subscribes Ebenezer Low, Jr. and Thomas Jalloson to continue in the service of the United States for three years. Low, who signed on 7 February 1781, and Jalloson who signed on 27 March 1781, both signed an "X" for their mark. Document has printed names of Caleb Davis, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Jeremiah Powell, President of the Senate. Also has printed name of John Hancock, Governor of Massachusetts.
