Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed as Secretary of State. In response to the repeal of British Orders in Council, instructs naval and privateering ships to assist, rather than obstruct, any American owned ships bringing British goods to the United States. Issued shortly after the start of the War of 1812. Compare to GLC01665.
