Lincoln is having Captain Asher R. Eddy relieved of duty as a Quarter Master in Springfield, Illinois because "a 'snarl' has somehow gotten up between him & [the State Government], which must be broken up." He asks Quartermaster General Meigs to replace Eddy and reassign him to an equally important post.

Executive Mansion,
Dec. 28. 1861
Quarter Master General
My dear Sir:
It is a necessity that [struck: Major] Capt. Eddy should not be retained in service at Springfield, Illinois. In this I am neither deciding, nor saying anything against Capt. Eddy. I mean this only -- we must have the hearty co-operation of the State Government there; and a "snarl" has somehow been gotten up between him & them, which must be broken up. Please send some other Quarter-Master, then, letting Capt. Eddy go somewhere else, equally important.
Yours truly
A. Lincoln
