Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Massachusetts Senator Pickering responds to a letter from McHenry, former Secretary of War. Sends McHenry documents he requested which accompanied a message from President James Madison (not included). Discusses Madison's decision to declare West Florida under American rule, labelling this action bold and rash. Refers to an enclosed copy of a letter from Gabriel Duvall, Comptroller of the United States Treasury (included as GLC01578.02).
