Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Arthur, writing as New York Quartermaster General, responds to a special order from Brigadier General Hillhouse by suggesting "that the proper transportation should be obtained from Major See at Elmira" for the 17th Regiment, because little of their route is in New York. Written on stationery of the New York State Quartermaster General's Department.
