Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks him for his continued support. Describes at length a "project" by "political friends" and others to denounce him so as to destroy his chances for election to the Senate. States that, "There is no one I believe who knows me that can for a moment entertain the opinion that I would change my political principles for personal advantage." Addressed to Heaton in Butler County, Ohio.
