Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks him for sending a book of poetry, "The Autumn Sheaf." States that Mr. Emerson [Ralph Waldo] left it with her a week ago. Informs that she has been busy with housekeeping duties and is going to make a trip to Bangor for her health. Writes, "I sympathize with Walton's idea of migrating & as soon as my wings grow I shall be off." The letter is only dated 9 May.
