Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Laperouse signs six times (once per month).

During 1779 and 1780, Laperouse, commander of the Amazone, participated in several military voyages from France to America and the West Indies. He later led a voyage of discovery commissioned by the French government; he died in 1788 during the expedition.
