Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks where he would like his finished bust sent. States that the marble piece was very fine and he hopes Sherman will be satisfied with his work.

French was an American sculptor whose works primarily depicted eminent Americans and symbolic figures. Sherman was an important Republican leader and a United States Senator from Ohio 1861-1877. He also served as Secretary of the Treasury and later as Secretary of State.
