Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports on the weather in Petersburg (cold with snow) and then goes on to comment on Aaron's studies. He compliments him on his interest in history and philosophy but cautions him not to neglect to also "...study grammar, dictionary & ciphering." Richard also mentions their aquaintance William R. Galt, a photograph received of their cousin Fanny [Timberlake], his confining schedule, and the building of an ice making factory.
