Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addressed: "Edward R. Archer, Esqr., Care [of] Me[ssrs.] Brown & Shipley, London [illegible]." The envelope has a forwarding slip affixed over this reading: "Care of Lombard, Odier & Co., Geneva." Scrawled in pencil are the Received and Answered dates, both of which indicate "Oct. 30th Geneva." Numerous dated postage marks [1878/10/28] and two U.S. postage stamps [one 2 cents and one 3 cents].
