Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Rejoices in the news of General William T. Sherman's march to the sea and the capture of Fort Fischer. States that he thinks it is a good time to gather all their men together and instigate a "Union march." Instructs Scammon to "Select your point of attack and route - stimulate the Union sentiment in the manner of Gen. Sherman in Savannah. The news is glorious." Written on stationary from Headquarters, Department of the South. Docket in pencil.

Now that Fort Fisher is captured, and Gen Sherman moving, I think it a good time to get together all of your available men and advancing into the country on [struck: are] a sort of "Union March" [2] as far as you judge safe and prudent or disirable.
