Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs his sister-in-law that he hopes to be in Boston, where she resides, by the following Saturday. "Washington" written in pencil on this document at a later date.

Dear Harriett,

I do not doubt I shall have six interruptions before I can get thru this letter - that or I shall make it -
- well - I leave here tomorrow evening & hope to be in Boston Saturday, or Sunday morning. I hear there is a very good house in Summer Street - & I mean to put up at it.
