Grant, commander-in-chief of the United States Army, writes to Meade, commander of the Army of the Potomac. Writes that General Winfield Scott Hancock will return (possibly to City Point) and will be too fatigued for active operations against Petersburg the following morning. Asks Meade if he thinks the necessary preparations can be made for a morning assault.

City Point, Va, July 28th 1864.
Maj. Gen. Meade,
Bringing Hancock back to night his Corps will be to much fatigued for active operations in the morning. He can however hold the ground of the 18th Corps and leave that ready [struck: for all] joining the 8th in a charge. I will hear what you have to say in this subject and then make the necessary orders. Do [2] you think the necessary preparation can be made for an assault in the morning.
