At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by Rice & Hart, printed and colored by Bowen. From The History of the Indian Tribes of North America, by Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall, and published between 1842 and 1870.

Between 1837 and 1844, McKenney and Hall collected and published a series of hand-colored lithographs depicting Native American tribal leaders and members of their parties. These lithographs were based on paintings done while the leaders visited Washington, D.C to sign treaties. The octavo size of Wat-Che-Mon-Ne was printed in several editions between 1842 and 1870.
