Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Assures his wife that he cares about her as much as ever. Writes, "...as far as Alexandria is concerned, should we be so unfortunate as to get there, you have known my feelings in regard to such things too long to doubt me for an instant..." Notes that they receive crackers and potatoes twice a week, as well as fresh beef.
