Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from camp at Fairfax Court House. Describes his involvement in the Battle of Bristoe (modern day Bristow) Station. Outlines his company's march to the Rapidan River, noting they fell back to Rappahannock Station and were followed by the enemy. Reports that they drove the enemy to Brandy Station and fell back to Bristoe Station. Written in pencil.
