Discusses military matters. Wishes to know the strength of the army Wharton is fighting, says he cannot send General Wood's forces far away, and says his men will soon be prepared to fight. Address page contains a penciled endorsement signed by Wharton, sent to Wood, saying he is preparing to attack the enemy. Written shortly before the Battle of Murfreesboro and the Stones River Campaign.
John Wharton was a Confederate Brigadier General, later promoted to Major General.
William Hardee was a Confederate Major General, later Lieutenant General.
Sterling Alexander Martin Wood was a Confederate Brigadier General.
