Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Pryor instructs, "Don't carry your troops to Blackwater Bridge in the morning. Hold them in readiness to join me at Franklin. The enemy threatens us seriously." Gibbs notes, in pencil, that he received this message at 9:30 pm. Possibly to Colonel George C. Gibbs of the 42nd North Carolina Infantry.
