Longstreet, commander of the Department of East Tennessee, writes to Wheeler, commanding a cavalry corps in the Army of Tennessee. In the midst of the Knoxville Campaign, writes "Col. [Ligons?] force should execute the move to the right of the enemy force... The force that joins Col Ligons will move to the enemys rear and catch him should he try to escape. If the information that you have is such as to warrant your move you may sit out... You will leave one brigade..." Written in pencil.

The Knoxville Campaign took place in November and December of 1863, and consisted of three battles (Campbell's Station, Fort Sanders, and Bean's Station).
