Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes a friendly letter to Tidball about how their military circle is breaking up since Tidball is leaving to head the Artillery School at Fort Monroe, and Sherman has left for St . Louis. Praises Tidball's reputation over the years he has known him and wishes him the best of luck in his new position. Hopes Tidball will remember their years working together fondly. Written on stationery of the Headquarters, Army of the United States.
