Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that although he had no order from R.T. Renshaw to burn a bridge at Little Washington, North Carolina, orders from Captain Graham led McKeever to "unhesitatingly say that I understood him to direct me to burn the Bridge." Signed by Mckeever as Acting Ensign and ex-officer of the U.S. steamer Louisiana.
