At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Dear Sir

I have the honor to transmit to you the following Resolution, just adopted by this Convention. "Resolved that a message be sent to his Excellency the Governor and to both branches of the Legislature, inviting their attendance at the Institute Hall this evening at 7 O'clock; and that this Convention move in procession to the Institute Hall, and there, at 7 O'clock, in the presence of the Constituted authorities of the States, and of the people, sign the Ordinance of Secession."
