At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain Stanton reports a shortage of supplies and insufficient ordnance during Wilderness campaign. The letter was written from the Ordnance Office, probably near Cold Harbor, Virginia.

Charles H. Whittelsey (1832-1871) graduated from Yale in 1853. He first served in the Civil War as a lieutenant in the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery in1862, and then he served later on the staff of General Robert O. Tyler and General Horatio G. Wright. He received promotion to brevet major for his services in the 1864 campaign before Richmond and the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaign; brevet lieutenant colonel for gallantry in the battles of Petersburg; and colonel for gallantry in the Appomattox campaign. He was named brevet brigadier general for his gallant Civil War service.
