Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Expects Craig to visit in July. Mentions his son Conway Hunt. Discusses his plans for the Fourth of July, and whether Craig should travel to Maine by steamer or train.

Among various other military posts, Hunt served as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. Craig was Chief of Ordnance 1851-1861.
