Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hopkins, a Representative from Pennsylvania, informs a recipient "Having full confidence in your statement in reference to the case of Genl. Hunt, I will cheerfully cooperate with Col Bayne in the proposed relief." Possibly refers to Thomas McKee Bayne, a Representative from Pennsylvania who had served as a colonel in the Civil War. Written on House of Representatives stationery. Includes a note written in pencil on verso to "Bob."

General Henry Jackson Hunt served as Governor of the Soldiers Home in Washington, D.C. from 1883 until his death.
