Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in camp near Petersburg. Lists officers and soldiers present for duty. Lists casualties: 2 enlisted men killed & 4 wounded, all from the 14th Battery Mass. Artillery. Cites guns, artillery, and other supplies. Lists numbers of horses, wagons, and mules.

Captain Shaffer served in the Fifteenth New York Heavy Artillery. In August and September of 1864, the Army of the Potomac was active in Virginia near Petersburg.
