Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed. Written near Petersburg. Captain Harn lists numbers of officers, guns, and horses, among other items pertinent to his brigade. Page two includes a return of horses killed and wounded, and ammunition and material lost and expended in action 8 September 1864. Docket written across printed text on page two.

During September of 1864, the Army of the Potomac was engaged near Petersburg.
