Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Craig, an assistant adjutant general (possibly of artillery reserves, Army of the Potomac), issues General Orders No. 7. Instructs troops on securing shelter and protection for battery horses. Notes that horses should be rough shod for winter, exercised daily, and harnessed at least twice per week. Includes instructions for grooming, cleaning, feeding, harnessing and equipping horses.
